South Gate Centre and Local Roots Café are looking for enthusiastic volunteers. For many positions, no experience is necessary, as training is provided for each position. See complete list of volunteer opportunities below.
If you can volunteer a few hours a week, or only occasionally, we would love to talk to you about joining our team!
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

OFFICE
Front Desk
Perform clerical duties as required. Welcome all visitors and answer questions about South Gate. Duties also include: Handling sales for 50/50 tickets, bus trips, registered programs and membership renewals/new memberships. Provide assistance with maintaining the coffee bar. Answer phones and direct calls as required. Perform cash out duties at end of each shift, balancing float and sales.

Café Desk
Collect money for café meals and Grab & Go items. Provide assistance with maintaining the coffee bar, carrying items to seat, etc. Perform cash out duties at end of each shift, balancing float and sales. Support Front Desk Volunteer as needed and cover their lunch break.
Check-In Desk
Provide information to visitors, assist members with check in procedure and conduct small tours for potential members. Provide assistance to the Front Desk and Cafe Desk Volunteers as needed.
Phone Work
Calling members, suppliers and sponsors for specific requests. (ie. Birthday call to all members).
KITCHEN
Food Preparation
Under the direction of the Kitchen staff, assist in the preparation of meals, snacks and beverages by making and refilling coffee urns, making sandwiches, cutting meat and vegetables, filling takeout containers for freezing.
Requirements: Food Handling Certificate
Dishwasher/Counter
Duties include the following tasks: Rinse dishes in water and bleach, wash dishes, dry dishes and put away in cupboards, load and unload dishwasher, wipe and sanitize tables and kitchen.
Meal Delivery Driver
Deliver hot or frozen meals to clients within Woodstock. Approximately one hour per week and typically occurs once a week.

PROGRAMMING
Fitness Instructor
Lead various classes for fitness such as seated fitness, stretch, total body workout, full standing fitness, yoga, tai-chi etc.
Requirements: SFIC Certification Required
Program Lead
Overseeing various weekly programs and events such as euchre, pepper, bid euchre, carpet bowling, cornhole, board games, book club etc. As the Program Lead, you oversee all aspects of the program you are responsible for including: schedules, some set-up/clean-up, and information liaison with Program Coordinator. Participate in Program Leads meeting monthly.
Program Assistant
Under the guidance of the Program Lead, assist in setting up tables, cards and scoresheets for card playing such as Euchre, Pepper, Bid Euchre and Klavergas.
Gardening
Be part of a group responsible for maintaining the many gardens on the South Gate property
CATERING
Server, Clean up Crew
Prepare the room and skirting the buffet tables. food areas such as coffee station and dessert station, possibly including the setup. Serve food on the buffet table, replenish water glasses, serve dessert to guests at tables. After meal is served, remove plates, glasses and cutlery as required.
Bartending
Responsible for the set up the bar prior to events including cleaning glasses, gathering ice and replenishing liquor stock. Duties include serving wine, beer and spirits at catered events and South Gate special events.
Requirements: Smart Serve Certificate
Decorating Team
Assists in setting up the room prior to catered events as per layout, placing tablecloths, napkins, cutlery, centerpieces and dishes on table. Setting up and skirting the buffet tables. Includes the decoration of facility for various functions and seasonally – designing table centerpieces, dressing of tables, decorating walls and ceiling.

SPECIAL EVENTS
50/50 (Lottery) Sales
Sell 50/50 tickets at special events such as Streetfest, Best U Health Expo, Recreation and Leisure Fair, Christmas Bazaar, Garden Extravaganza, Car shows, dances, golf tournament and other member events.
Parking Attendant
Assist visitors and members with parking at various events such as Streetfest, car shows and special events. Directing traffic to maintain safety and flow.

Greeter
Welcome visitors and members at various functions such as the Best U Health Expo, Streetfest, car shows, dances and other member events
Setup/Tear Down Crew (Red Shirts)
Assist in the set up and take down at various events such as Learning Unlimited, Best U Expo, Christmas Bazaar, Streetfest, Catered Events and Member events such as dances and cultural meals. Includes laying out tables and chairs, setting up stations such as the registration table, side tables and podiums. May include general clean up at the end of the event. Must be able to lift chairs and tables.
Registration Desk/Cashier
Welcoming participants, members and the public attending special events. Process registration from participants and collect funds for attendance.

ORGANIZATION TEAMS
Board of Directors
Members of the Board of Directors are nominated to the committee and are responsible to provide the necessary support and guidance for the overall operation of the Centre. Accepted members term is for 3 years.
​
Members’ Committee
The Members’ Committee’s purpose is to focus on membership initiatives, including the representation of members’ concerns by acting as liaison between staff, the Board of Directors and other committees.
​
Special Events Committee
This committee reports to the Members’ Committee and their main purpose is to organize or identify member events such as dances, car shows, Streetfest, Christmas Bazaar, fairs and other special events.
​
Finance Committee
This committee reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible to review finances of the Centre monthly and report findings to the board. They assist in the creation of the annual budget. This committee also makes recommendations of financial systems, budgeting and expenditure control.
​
Travel Committee (Bus Trips)
This Committee is responsible to seek out trips of common interest to members and non-members, document on the calendar, arrange the venue and buses, and coordinate/promote ticket sales. May include travel to venues as the “tour guide” ensuring schedules are kept, ticket distribution and keeping participant counts.
​
Sports Leagues
Lead and/or assist the lead in running seasonal leagues such as the baseball and golf leagues on a weekly basis during the summer months. This could include attending spring/fall meetings, setting schedules, managing teams or organize foursomes, paying and scheduling the facilities and creating weekly games.
